Over a long history of Hollywood film, spanning genres from the Western to contemporary narco dramas, Mexico has occupied a precarious space in the US cinematographic imaginary. This presentation examines two distinct representations of the border separating the United States and Mexico, and their respective presentations of the dangers of cultural, legal, and violent contamination in the post-9/11 US landscape: Ethan and Joel Coen’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel No Country for Old Men (2007), and Matt Piedmont’s slapstick parody Casa de mi padre (2012).
